Gustav Holst’s The Planets remains one of the great orchestral landmarks of the 20th century, its seven movements evoking the astrological characters of our solar system with colours that still astonish a century later. Also featured is Imogen Holst’s Suite for String Orchestra, whose rhythmic vitality and elegant counterpoint reveal a distinctive voice now gaining overdue recognition. Adding a thrilling contemporary edge, John Psathas’s Djinn blends myth, jazz and global traditions in a dazzling marimba concerto. Conducted by Alice Farnham, with Orchestra Victoria’s Mathew Levy as soloist, this program promises virtuosity, imagination and radiant orchestral colour.
